Day Trips and Outings

Several ties each year SLO RAM members can participate in special events or tours at local destinations. These outings are typically open to spouses or significant others. Announcements of upcoming outings are posted below and in the Monthly Bulletin. Upcoming Outings

A tour of San Luis Obispo Fire Station One (2160 Santa Barbara Avenue) is scheduled for Thursday May 26th at 10am. It will be a relatively short tour. It is scheduled soon after that day’s Coffee Cabinet. The Fire Department’s Training Grounds and a World Trade Center Memorial are co-located with Fire Station One. The tour is limited to 30 people. Lunch is not being coordinated in conjunction with this outing but the Village Host Pizza & Grill is directly across the street from the Fire Station.  To sign up contact Hal Thilmony.

Virtual Day Trips

SLO RAM Day Trips were on-hold during the COVID-19 restrictions. In lieu of in-person trips, videos of local interest were collected during that time for your enjoyment in the safety and comfort of your home. These videos are listed below – just click on the green box to watch them.

Windset Farms operates an 8 million square foot greenhouse complex in Santa Maria using state-of-the art technology and responsible growing practices. It is a pioneer in water conservation, energy conservation and renewable energy. Windset was on our list of possible day trip destinations but unfortunately, they do not accommodate group tours. In lieu of tours, Windset provided two videos.

A detailed discussion of the gang of outlaws in San Luis Obispo County in the mid to late 19th century is presented by Pete Kelly as part of History Center’s Carnegie Lecture series.  The video is over one hour long. There is also a link to a survey to provide feedback to the History Center.

Jim Gregory, author of San Luis Obispo County Desperados, Vigilantes and Bootleggers tells the story of Jack Powers and his gang of outlaws that terrorized San Luis Obispo County in the 1850’s and 60’s in a 10 minute C-Span video.
The video from the Dec 3, 2020 ECOSLO live event called “Curb to Compost” is now available for viewing.  Mike DiMilo, the Education Program Coordinator for SLO County’s Integrated Waste Management Authority, discusses the local anaerobic digester in this informative 41 minute video.

Tour the Santa Barbara Zoo with John Cleese

Amtrak’s Coast Starlight passes through San Luis Obispo six days a week on it’s ride connecting Los Angeles and Seattle. This 45 minute video provides scenic views and informative commentary for the 1377 mile trip following the northbound route.
 

Jack San Filippo, Point San Luis Lighthouse program manager, shares the history of shipping activity at Avila Beach and the construction and operation of the Lighthouse in this informative C-Span video clip. On-site tours of the Lighthouse are currently suspended until further notice. 

February 2020 Day Trip Big Success

Our first Day Trip outing for 2020 was a big success.

Nearly 40 SLO RAM members and guests participated in presentations at the Cal Poly Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (aka HotHouse). Executive Director John Townsend provided an overview of CIE’s mission and accomplishments. This was followed by discussions of two business ventures that have benefited from the CIE program. Sidney Collin demonstrated NexStride a walking assistant device for sufferers of Parkinson’s Disease from her company – De Oro Devices.  David Bartolomucci discussed his company – Roopairs – a work order management platform connecting restaurants and equipment servicing companies.A delicious and lively lunch at Mestiza followed
